If you are looking for design ideas to decorate your bedroom, good for you! That probably means that you have finished decorating the rest of your home. Unfortunately, the bedroom is usually the last room to get any attention because we are so focused on finishing the more public spaces.

Decorate Your Bedroom-8 Design Ideas

Before you get started, there are a few decorating “rules” that can help you achieve that cohesive look and cozy feel you’re after.  Here are eight steps to consider before you begin to decorate your bedroom.

  1. Headboard: Make sure the top of your headboard is at least four feet from the floor so you can see the beautiful, decorative pillows you’re going to add. (More on pillows later!) If your headboard is too high, it can make your ceilings look too low. If you happen to have high ceilings, you can go taller than four feet for the headboard.
  2. Pillows: Have a minimum of four pillows on your bed and layer them with the tallest pillows against the headboard. Be sure to select different sizes and play around with placement until you’re happy with the result.
  3. Throw: A bed is not complete without a throw. It’s kind of like how jewelry finishes off an outfit. Throws are relatively inexpensive and can add a pop of color to your room. If you fold it, make sure it hangs anywhere from 7 to 12 inches off the sides, or it will look too small for the bed. A twin-size throw would be perfect for a queen-size bed.
  4. Bedside tables: If you plan on adding bedside tables, make sure they are the same height or shorter than the bed when it’s fully made up. That usually means around 25 inches high. They don’t have to be matchy-matchy, but they should be close in height.
  5. Lamps:  When looking for lamps to go on your bedside table, look for those between 25-27 inches high. If you are going for symmetry, they should either be identical or the same height. If you select lamps that are not the same height, you can put some books under the shorter one to raise it up.
  6. Artwork over the bed: Please don’t leave this space empty when you decorate your bedroom! If your bed is situated correctly in the room, (click here and here to learn more about furniture placement), the space above it is the first place our eyes rest when entering the room. The artwork you place there should be large enough to make an impact.  You can place a single piece of art or create a gallery wall. Just make sure it doesn’t extend past the bed’s edges.
  7. Bench at the foot of the bed: If you decide to put a bench at the foot of the bed, make sure it’s at least 2/3 the width of the bed, so it doesn’t look too small. Any height will work as long as it’s lower than the bed.
  8. Area rug: An area rug is a finishing touch to the room. If the rest of the room is decorated in muted or neutral colors, here is where you can experiment with texture, color, and design. The rug needs to be significantly larger than the bed, but not completely covered by it. It should rest about a foot in front of the bedside tables and end at least 2 feet out from the bed or bench.

You now have the tools you need to decorate your bedroom.

  1. You’re so right about neglecting the bedroom until last. I need to update my bedroom too. I could use some art over my bed. I have some Japanese prints to be framed that I could use but I haven’t gotten around to it – I tend to focus my effort in other living spaces.
