The Best Way to Freshen Towels in the Laundry

Do you sometimes notice a musty odor on your towels? It’s not your imagination.  This happens because there is a build up of detergent and fabric softener on the towels.

When detergent and fabric softener build up on the towels, it reduces its absorbency, and the towels become stiff. They also turn smelly when wet.

Here is the best way to freshen towels in the laundry:

  • Wash the towels in hot water and add 1/2-1 cup of distilled white vinegar to the water-no detergent.
  • Wash the towels a second time in hot water and add 1/2-1 cup of baking soda-no detergent.
  • Dry them with dryer balls or 1/2 dryer sheet to avoid static cling.
  • The next time you wash the towels, add 1/2 cup of vinegar in the fabric softener dispenser, and add detergent to the water as usual.

These steps will remove the build-up of detergent and fabric softener, and will make the towels soft and fluffy like they were when you purchased them!

I use homemade detergent (castile liquid soap based) vinegar in every load, and dryer balls. No build up, no static:) Vinegar is probably our most used household item!
