Declutter Your Clothes

Remove Everything From Your Closet

When you begin to declutter your clothes, you will have to remove ALL of the contents of your closet. As you remove the items, sort them into categories: suits, pants, dresses, blouses, jackets, shoes, etc.

Be honest with yourself when deciding what to keep. Donate items that haven’t been worn within the past year.

Place any items that you plan to give away into one pile or fold and place them neatly into a box. (Be sure to check the pockets first! 😉 )

If you have items that are seasonal in your closet, find another spot in your home for them in the attic, basement, garage, or in an unused closet.

Before putting anything back in the closet, dust, vacuum, and paint the walls if you want a fresh, new look.

Be Honest with Yourself

Most people only wear 20% of their clothes 80% of the time. Let’s be honest. We all have particular articles of clothing that we wear over and over, while others are worn occasionally or not at all.

So take a good, hard look at what’s left to make sure the clothes still fit, and you will wear them.

Add Closet Storage Solutions

The following items are what I use to help my clients declutter and organize their clothes.

This tie and belt rack can hold 72 ties and belts and is battery-operated with a light.

A shoe rack will keep shoes off the floor and in better condition than sprawled all over the floor. You can also purchase plastic see-through shoe boxes and stack them on shelves. Another option for shoes is an over-the-door shoe rack or a canvas shoe holder (seen in the photo below.)

If you store sweaters on shelves, a shelf divider will help to keep them from falling over and creating a mess.

3M hooks are great for hanging purses or jewelry on unused wall space.

If you have lots of hanging clothes, a space-saving hanger unit that drapes down while holding six items will free up lots of space in your closet.

You can also add an adjustable hanging rod to increase hanging space.

Decorative Bins on the shelves will help store socks and undergarments.

A jewelry organizer that hangs on the closet rod keeps your jewelry from getting tangled and allows you to select pieces while getting dressed for the day.

Closet Organizing Tips

          • When you hang your clothes back into the closet, place the hangers backward. After you wash the item and hang it back up, turn the hanger the correct way. Now you’ll know which pieces have been worn and which items still need to be worn.
          • To free up closet space, move extra items to your bedroom dresser or another closet.
          • Everything needs to be visible in your closet.
          • Move anything that is not clothing to another part of the house.
          • Decide if you want to hang your clothes together by outfit, color, or group like items together.
          • Use clear containers. If you decide not to use clear containers, label them, so you know what’s inside.

When you begin the process of decluttering your clothes, remember that the key to success is scaling down what you have so everything will fit in your closet.

After following these tips, your closet will be well-organized, and you will be able to get dressed much quicker in the morning!
